Wingless Sprints In Record Numbers At Bis
Updated 15 December 2009
The Wingless Sprint category hit the 20 car mark at Brisbane International Speedway last Saturday Night. The field included cars from as far afield as Mackay (a 10 hours plus tow) and the Lismore area also provided a strong presence with 7 teams making the journey across the border.
The feature race saw the largest field of Wingless Sprints ever at BIS. Unfortunately ex AMCA racer Allan Harris and Lismore pair Nick Preston and Brent Hall all succumbed to car dramas, leaving 17 cars to take the green. The fact that a little over 12 months ago, the first ever appearance of Wingless Sprints in Queensland had a field of 3 cars is testimony to the growth of this class nationwide.
After 2 rounds of hard fought heats it was Mackay Driver Nathan MacFarlane who led the points count with local Brisbane hot shoe Trent Gaudry joining him on the front row.
Anthony Vandereyden and Lismore?s David Eggins made up the second row, followed by Bruce Hall and Brent Aprile in positions 5 and 6.
With the crowd on its feet, the field roared into the first turn where all hell broke loose. In the mid field Warren Marquis rode a wheel and embarked on a wild ride, achieving impressive airtime in the Q10 Tognotti. The rest of the field did a great job to miss the flipping car. As the red light came on Trent Gaudry had a throttle issue and took evasive action to avoid the car in front only to hit the turn three wall hard. Both drivers emerged unscathed but the same could not be said for their machines.
At the restart, MacFarlane took the advantage followed by Vandereyden with Aprile moving into third. On lap 7, Aprile passed Vanderreyden for second and a lap later took the lead. The battle at the front was terrific to watch with the top three being joined by Justin Gaudry, who started in 9th, and David Eggins. 2 laps later MacFarlane overcooked it and spun the Q99 racer, leaving Aprile and Vandereyden fighting for the lead. The pair raced side by side right to the line with Aprile holding on to win by a wheel. Justin Gaudry was close behind in third, with David Eggins and David Santin rounding out the top 5.
